BDH Shifters Australia — Mechanical H-Pattern, Sequential and Force Feedback

BDH Race Sim Hardware are a small British manufacturer with an unusually narrow focus: they make gear shifters and nothing else. No wheelbases, no pedals, no rigs. Five years of that single-mindedness has produced a range where each model is genuinely different rather than a trim level of the last one, including mechanisms you will not find anywhere else in sim racing, like the S1's weighted Dynamic Inertia Mechanism and the Active's servo-driven, telemetry-fed force feedback.

Everything is machined from aerospace-grade aluminium, assembled by hand in the UK and individually tuned for gate resistance and travel before it ships. Their hardware is used by Motorsport UK for driver development and specified for sim centres and rally schools, where a shifter takes thousands of changes a week rather than a few hundred. The three purely mechanical models carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

The BDH Range

Four shifters, four genuinely different jobs. All of them share the same mounting plate design and can be top-, side- or reverse-mounted on an aluminium profile rig, so a mount bought for one carries over to another.

Choosing Between Them

The two questions that decide it are what you drive and whether you run SimHub.

Start with what you drive

Only gated manual cars? The H1. A dedicated mechanism with nothing compromised to serve a second mode.
Both gated and sequential? The H2SQ. Two real mechanisms in one unit and one control profile covers both.
Mostly rally? The S1. The longest shaft, the hardest action and the inertial kick of a dog-box.
Want the most lifelike shifting made? The Active, if and only if you run SimHub.

Then check the practical things

PC only. None of the BDH range is console licensed, so they will not work on PlayStation or Xbox.
Any wheel base. They connect to your PC, not to your base, so Simagic, MOZA, Fanatec, Simucube and the rest are all fine.
Profile rigs mount directly. On a wheel stand or desk you will need a shifter mount.

Why BDH

One product category, five years, and mechanisms nobody else has built.

Most sim racing brands treat the shifter as an accessory to a wheelbase line. BDH treat it as the whole business, and the difference shows up in places a spec sheet does not capture: gate pegs radiused so they wear evenly, shear components rated to 40 tonnes, detent presets that lock instead of drifting, and a weighted inertia mechanism that nobody else in sim racing has attempted.

Metal, not plastic

HE260 aerospace aluminium chassis, high-tensile steel internals, PTFE-lined spherical bearings and self-lubricating bronze guides. Nothing load-bearing is plastic, which is what lets BDH offer a lifetime warranty on the mechanical models.

Tuned by hand, one at a time

Each unit's gate resistance and travel are set by hand before it ships, which is why two BDH shifters of the same model feel like each other. It is also why there is a build queue rather than a warehouse.

Who are BDH Race Sim Hardware?

Which BDH shifter should I buy?

Start with what you drive. If you only drive gated manual cars, the H1 is the most focused H-pattern in the range. If you drive both gated and sequential cars, the H2SQ carries two independent mechanisms in one unit. If you mostly drive rally, the S1 is the hardest, most characterful sequential thanks to its Dynamic Inertia Mechanism. The Active is the most lifelike of all, but it needs SimHub to do what it does. What is the difference between the H1 and the H2SQ?

The H1 is H-pattern only, and everything inside it is sized for that single job, which gives its detents a classic, solid mechanical feel. The H2SQ adds a full sequential mechanism on a second, independent rail, with a mechanical collar that switches between them and remaps the sensors as it does. The H2SQ's H-pattern is also slightly smoother and more refined than the H1's, because the dual-shaft alignment reduces play. Choose the H1 for focus and character, the H2SQ for versatility.

What is the difference between the S1 and the H2SQ in sequential mode?

They are tuned for different disciplines. The S1 is rally-focused, with a longer shaft and a high-impact, aggressive action driven by its weighted Dynamic Inertia Mechanism. The H2SQ's sequential is sprint-style, with a shorter shaft and smoother engagement, which suits circuit and touring car driving. Both use BDH's precision mechanical architecture and both can be side-mounted to make the most of your rig space.

What is the Dynamic Inertia Mechanism in the S1?

It is BDH's weighted inertia system and it is an industry first. Rather than relying on spring tension alone, a proprietary weighted cylindrical assembly of ball bearings, compression springs and dampers translates lever motion into real momentum transfer. As you shift, that moving mass produces a momentary inertial pulse through the lever, reproducing the energy kick of an actual racing transmission selector rather than approximating it with a spring.

What does the BDH Active actually do that a normal shifter cannot?

The Active has a high-torque servo inside the same billet chassis as the H1, fed by live telemetry from SimHub. That lets it change its behaviour according to what the car is doing: holding the lever firm under drivetrain load to replicate torque retention, delivering vibration and kickback when you grind a gear, and locking the gate when the clutch says a change should not be possible. It is derived from telemetry rather than played back as a canned effect, so two shifts under different loads genuinely feel different.

Do I need SimHub for a BDH shifter?

Only for the Active, where SimHub is required for the force feedback features to work. The H1, H2SQ and S1 are purely mechanical and need no software at all: they enumerate as standard game controllers and you bind the gears in your sim. SimHub is free and widely used, and many sim racers already run it for dashboards or bass shakers, but if you have no intention of running it then one of the three mechanical models is the better buy.

Do BDH shifters work on PlayStation or Xbox?

No. Every BDH shifter is a PC device. Consoles only accept licensed peripherals and BDH shifters are not console licensed, so none of them will be recognised on a PlayStation or an Xbox, including through an adapter. If you are on console, our console sim racing gear range covers what will work.

Will a BDH shifter work with my Simagic, MOZA, Fanatec or Simucube setup?

Yes, with any of them. BDH shifters connect to your PC directly rather than plugging into a wheel base, so they are completely independent of what brand your base, wheel or pedals are. They work alongside Simagic, MOZA, Fanatec, Simucube, Asetek, Cammus, Logitech and Thrustmaster hardware without any special configuration.

How do BDH shifters mount to a rig?

They use an integrated clamp system designed for aluminium profile rigs, with standard M8 x 1.25 points and T-nut compatibility, and every model can be top-mounted, side-mounted or reverse-mounted. Side-mounting is the most popular option because it frees the space beside the seat. Importantly, all BDH shifters share the same mounting plate design, so a mount bought for one carries over if you change models. On a wheel stand or a desk you will need a shifter mount arm.

Can I side-mount a BDH shifter to save space?

Yes, and it is what BDH designed the clamp system around. Every shifter in the range can be side- and reverse-mounted directly onto aluminium profile without third-party brackets or adapters, which is the practical way to make the most of the room on a rig. Most owners end up side-mounting rather than putting a substantial metal shifter on top of the frame.

Do I need a clutch pedal?

For H-pattern driving it is strongly recommended: many sims penalise clutchless changes on a manual gate, and on the Active the clutch lock-out and bite point calibration are built around having one. For sequential driving it matters far less, since sequential boxes are generally driven clutchless once moving. Any three-pedal set works, because the shifter is read as a separate controller. How many gears do BDH H-pattern shifters have?

The H1 and the H2SQ both have eight gear gates with a configurable layout, so you can run four, five, six or seven speeds plus reverse depending on the car. The Active supports configurable gate layouts from four-speed to six-speed, changeable at the unit via its onboard encoder. On the H1 and H2SQ the physical position of the reverse gate is changed by rotating the whole unit 180 degrees, although you can reassign gates freely inside the game.

Can I adjust how heavy the shift feels?

Yes, on every model, and without tools. The H1 and H2SQ have an adjustable detent gauge with a locking preset so your setting does not drift, the S1 has an integrated tension thumb wheel that spans light-and-fast to heavy-and-deliberate, and the Active's haptic intensity is adjustable at the unit via the OLED and rotary encoder. Every BDH shifter is also hand-tuned for gate resistance and travel before it leaves the factory.

What warranty do BDH shifters come with?

The three purely mechanical models, the H1, H2SQ and S1, carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship, and on the H2SQ that cover extends to commercial use. The Active carries a 2-year warranty, which is shorter because of the servo and control electronics inside it. After any warranty period BDH continue to offer support under their return-for-repair policy. Because you bought through Player1 Sim Gear, claims are handled by us here in Queensland, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply on top of the manufacturer's warranty.

How long does delivery take?

It depends on the model. The Black and Red and plain Black H2SQ units are held as Australian stock and ship from our Queensland warehouse. Silver H2SQ units are made to order in Europe and take roughly three weeks. The H1, S1 and Active are hand-built to order in the UK, so there is a build queue that moves with demand. Are your prices in Australian dollars and do they include GST?

Yes. Every price on our site is in Australian dollars with GST included, and there is nothing further to pay on delivery. Buying locally rather than importing direct from the UK means no separate import duty, no GST collected at the border and no customs brokerage handling fee for you to sort out yourself, which on hardware at this level is a meaningful difference.

Yes. The range is deliberately compact and serviceable, with wear components that can be replaced rather than the whole unit being scrapped, which is part of why they suit commercial users. Beyond the warranty period BDH offer support under their return-for-repair policy, which uses a customs classification designed so that VAT or import tax is not paid twice on an international repair. Talk to us first and we will coordinate it so the unit is declared correctly.

Do you supply BDH shifters to sim centres and driver training academies?

Yes. BDH hardware is built for exactly that duty cycle, it is used by Motorsport UK for driver development, and the H2SQ's lifetime warranty explicitly covers commercial use.
